The Cure is Us
Biography
The Cure Is Us is the long-running musical project of French-American musician, composer, and producer Laurent Cleenewerck de Kiev.
The Name & Philosophy
The name The Cure Is Us is a deliberate play on Laurent’s deep admiration for the iconic British band The Cure. It also carries a profound personal and philosophical meaning: the idea that the solutions to our struggles — emotional, spiritual, and existential — lie not in external forces, but within ourselves. The “cure” is us. This dual inspiration shapes a body of work that blends the atmospheric, introspective, and emotionally raw qualities of The Cure’s sound with a message of inner resilience, self-discovery, and hope.
Musical Legacy
Laurent has been writing songs for this project since the 1990s, building a deep catalog over decades. The music channels post-punk, alternative rock, gothic rock, and new wave influences while maintaining a distinctive voice. It explores themes of longing, faith, doubt, love, loss, and personal transformation.
The project has released several albums and singles, including:
- Underneath the Waves (2018)
- A Different World (2022)
- Never Grow Cold (2019)
and numerous standalone tracks such as “Hello,” “Gone,” “Destiny,” “Return to the Light,” and others.
A notable aspect of recent releases is the use of Laurent’s AI-generated voice for some vocal performances. This innovative approach allows the project to continue releasing music consistently. Laurent plans to resume personal vocal recordings in 2027.
Covers & Reception
The Cure Is Us has also paid direct homage to its namesake through covers of The Cure’s songs. Their version of “Lament” (and others) has been particularly well-received, earning praise for its respectful yet personal reinterpretation of the original’s moody atmosphere.
Overall Vision
As a generational legacy project, The Cure Is Us represents Laurent Cleenewerck de Kiev’s lifelong dedication to music as a vehicle for emotional honesty and healing. It stands alongside his other creative outlets — including Laurent de Kiev (French poetic adaptations), The Faith and Doubt Project, and the newer The Lost Domain — but maintains its own unique space as a deeply personal, Cure-inspired exploration of the human condition.
Through haunting melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and atmospheric production, The Cure Is Us continues to remind listeners that even in our darkest moments, the strength to move forward has always been inside us.
