Interview: Lake C. of The Lost Domain on Sonic Inspirations and Future Sounds

The Pitch: Lake, thanks for joining us. The Lost Domain’s latest album blends retro synths with modern pop edges. Can you start by discussing how even 80s and 90s icons like Depeche Mode have shaped your approach to music composition?

Lake C.: Absolutely, thrilled to be here. The legacy of synth pop is huge for us—they pioneered that dark, atmospheric synthpop that feels both intimate and emotional and expansive. In composition, we draw from their use of layered synthesizers and emotional depth, like in “Enjoy the Silence.” It influences how we build tension in our tracks, starting minimal and escalating to cathartic releases. Production-wise, their analog warmth inspires us to mix vintage gear with digital tools, avoiding sterile sounds.

The Pitch: Speaking of legacies, how do you see those 80s and 90s vibes evolving into today’s music scene, particularly with artists reviving synthpop elements?

Lake C.: It’s a full-circle revival. The Weeknd nails it with his synth-heavy R&B, like on “Blinding Lights,” which echoes that 80s drive but with contemporary polish. It’s influenced our production by encouraging bolder hooks and retro-futuristic vibes. We aim to capture that nostalgic energy while pushing boundaries, much like how those eras balanced innovation with accessibility.

The Pitchfork: You’ve mentioned current pop crossovers. How has something like Justin Bieber’s “Stay” or Harry Styles’ “As It Was” impacted your sound design and songwriting?

Lake C.: “Stay” by Bieber and The Kid LAROI has that infectious, minimalist electronic pulse at a very high BPM, 147 to be precise — it’s influenced our composition by showing how sparse production can amplify emotional lyrics. For Harry Styles’ “As It Was,” the upbeat synthpop groove with indie flair has pushed us to experiment with tempo shifts and catchy choruses. In our tracks, we’re blending those pop sensibilities with our edgier roots, making songs that feel timeless yet fresh.

The Pitch: With technology advancing rapidly, what’s your take on the emerging role of AI in music composition and production? Has it influenced The Lost Domain’s process?

Lake C.: AI is fascinating—it’s like a new instrument in the toolkit. We’ve used AI for generating initial melody ideas or soundscapes, which sparks creativity without replacing human intuition. In production, it helps with mixing suggestions or even analyzing influences from Depeche Mode and New Order-era synths. But it’s a double-edged sword; it democratizes music-making, yet risks homogenizing sounds if over-relied on. For us, it’s about augmentation, not automation.

The Pitch: Looking ahead, how do you envision balancing these historical influences with modern trends and tech like AI in your future work?

Lake C.: We’re all about synthesis—pun intended. Drawing from the ever-compelling sounds of 80s New Wave and Synthpop (blame supermarket music!), The Weeknd’s revival, and pop hits like “Stay” or “As It Was,” we’ll keep evolving. AI will help explore uncharted territories, but the core remains human stories and emotions. Expect our next project to fuse 80s grit with AI-assisted experimentation, creating something that honors the past while defining the now.
